Chiran Bukeyashiki teien3. The garden of Ryoichi Hirayama" Kagoshima-pref

"Chiran Bukeyashiki teien 3. The garden of Ryoichi Hirayama" Kagoshima-pref

Each Chiran samurai residence has a Japanese garden, and all 7 gardens are open to the public for a fee.

This time, the third one is "Ryoichi Hirayama Garden". This garden is very simple and sets it apart from other gardens. The background of the garden is a chamfered hedge of Maki, which is trimmed slightly in a wavy shape. The "Satsuki / azaleas that bloom small pink flowers" planted in front of them are one big topiary, shaped like a large peas. It is no exaggeration to say that this garden has only hedges in the background and a large topiary of Satsuki. It's a garden that is too bold. But in reality, that's not the only element of the garden. Ten pillars of cut stones are lined up before the cutting of Satsuki, and they also make sense. Actually, they are the stands for decorating bonsai. In other words, the protagonist of this topiary garden may have been bonsai. Interestingly, it seems that the old Ryukyu garden style also has a stone stand for bonsai in the garden. I felt that the connection between Satsuma and Ryukyu was also appearing in the garden around here. This is not the only example of a stone stand that decorates bonsai in the garden, but it was very interesting. I was able to talk a little with Mr. Hirayama's current head, who was in the mansion for the ventilation of the mansion, and told me that the horizontally long chozubachi is for removing blood glue from the sword. It's an element unique to a samurai residence. I sometimes see a horizontally long chozubachi at a temple in Kyoto, but maybe the original is the same. I did not know that. I learned one more thing.
