「旧安川邸」は石炭関連企業を数々創設し旧安川電機を創業した安川敬一郎により明治45年に建設され、以後三代にわたり安川家当主及び一族が居住した住宅。明治45年に同じ北九州市内の若松から移築された豪華な近代和風建築の大座敷棟1棟、明治45年竣工の南北の蔵２棟、昭和2年竣工の洋館1棟、昭和13年竣工の第二次本邸棟の一部などが残されている。

旧安川邸の庭園は明治４５年移築の大座敷棟の北側に築庭された大座敷前庭園を中心としている。この庭園は屋敷とともに長らく荒れ果て原型をとどめていなかったが屋敷の保存が決まった段階で発掘され復元された。庭は明治期特有の明るく開放的な芝生の広場と背後の傾斜地を利用した築山で構成される。築山の中ほどにつくられた滝を起点とする枯流れの縁には巨石が配され立派な石橋も架けられている。この巨石と石橋は岡山県豊島から運ばれた「豊島石・てしまいし」。巨石は礼拝石と推察するが実際のところ何に見立てられているかは不明。滝の上にはタンクがあり令和４年４月以降水が流されている（タイマー設定）。新しいガラスの四阿は斬新、事前の発掘調査によりその場所に四阿があったことがわかり文化庁の許可を得て新たに建てられた。孫文も訪れた大座敷の畳廊下の先に置かれた巨大な靴脱ぎ石が圧巻。縁先手水鉢は濡れ縁から離れて置かれ来客の際には柄杓に水を汲む係がいたことを物語る。そのそばの大きな利久型（遠州型）灯籠は、福岡市の「楽水園」・小郡市の「さとう別荘」など明治から大正時代に作られた庭に同型のものがあり、その頃に流行したものと思われる。大座敷棟の茶室の外には竹垣で仕切られた瀟洒な設えの露地がある。また茶室に隣接する洋館棟に面する庭も露地の設えで和洋折衷の趣。この露地庭に面した一階は西洋館にもかかわらず和室となっておりこの屋敷の主「安川敬一郎」の居室であった。二棟の蔵に面した裏庭はそれなりの広さがあるものの周囲を建物に囲まれ坪庭の風情があり善導寺型灯籠が景の中心となっており、こちらも露地の趣を持つ。昭和初期に建てられた第二次本邸は玄関と応接室を残し大部分が失われたため、その跡地にかっての間取りを示す現代庭園が作られている。その南側に園遊会などに使われた洋風の芝生庭園があり、すぐ隣の旧松本邸「西日本工業倶楽部」が塀越しにのぞめる。旧安川邸がある夜宮公園には菖蒲池や曲水庭園などもあるのであわせて巡りたい。

The "Former Residence of Yasukawa" was built in 1897 by Keiichiro Yasukawa, who founded many coal-related companies and founded the former Yaskawa Electric Corporation and made a great contribution to the development of Kitakyushu City. After that, the head of the Yasukawa family and the family lived in this house for three generations. One large Japanese-style building relocated from Wakamatsu in the same Kitakyushu city in 1897, two north-south warehouses completed in 1945, one Western-style building completed in 1945, and 1938. A part of the completed second main residence building is left.

The garden of the Former Residence of Yasukawa is centered on the Ozashiki-mae garden, which was built on the north side of the Ozashiki building that was relocated in 1897. This garden has long been desolate and has not remained in its original form, but was excavated and restored when the mansion was decided to be preserved. The garden consists of a bright and open lawn plaza peculiar to the Meiji era and an artificial hill using the natural slope behind. Megaliths are arranged on the edge of the dry stream starting from the dry waterfall built in the middle of the artificial hill, and a magnificent stone bridge is also built. In addition, the newly made glass Azumaya is novel. The huge stone for taking off shoes placed at the end of the tatami corridor of Ozashiki, which Sun Yat-sen also visited, is a masterpiece. The same type as the large Rikyu type (Enshu type) stone lantern is located in "Rakusuien" in Fukuoka City and "Sato Villa" in Ogori City, and it is presumed that it was popular during the Meiji and Taisho eras. Outside the tea room of the Ozashiki building, there is a stylish open space separated by a bamboo fence. In addition, the garden facing the Western-style building adjacent to the tea room is also a Japanese-Western style with a tea garden. Although the backyard facing the two warehouses has a certain size, it is surrounded by buildings and has the atmosphere of a tsubo garden, and the Zendoji-type lanterns are the center of the scenery, so this also has the taste of a tea garden. The second main residence, which was built in the early Showa period, has lost most of it, leaving the entrance and drawing room, so a modern garden showing the floor plan of the site has been created. On the south side, there is a Western-style lawn plaza used for garden parties, and the former Matsumoto House "West Japan Industrial Club" next to it can be seen through the fence. Yomiya Park, where the former Yasukawa House is located, has an iris pond and a stream garden, so we recommend that you visit them together.
