「貴賓室 花王」

1926年、萩への御行幸で昭和天皇は常茂恵旅館に宿泊された。そして1968年山口国体で再び常茂恵に宿泊。その客室を忠実に移築復元した総檜造りの部屋が「花王」である。この部屋は宿泊棟の一番奥に位置し専用の潜戸の先へはその宿泊者しか行くことはできない。他の部屋にもそれぞれ専用庭園があるが、「花王」の専用庭園は特別だ。軒下の靴脱ぎ石からはじまる飛び石の列は庭へとゆるやかに弧を描いて縦断し、おなじく弧を描き優雅な首飾りのように庭を横断する飛び石の列と交わる。これは萩とともに日本海に面する山陰の松江で発展した庭園様式「出雲流庭園」の流れをくんでいる。また同じ萩市内の菊屋家住宅・庭園と共通する趣も感じられる。飛び石が交わる先の庭の真ん中で一際強い存在感を放つ礼拝石がこの庭の要だ。この石は昭和天皇のお立ち台と考えるべきだろう。「本座敷」「次の間」それぞれの軒下の靴脱ぎ石から庭へと飛び石が続いているが、「次の間」は「真」、「本座敷」は「草」の靴脱ぎ石で対になっている。庭の背後の築山には枯滝石組があり石組みの隙間をタマモノ仕立てのサツキやハマヒサカキなどの低木類が埋めつくしている。むかって右手に立つ石灯籠は個人的にはここでしか見たことがないので名称は不明だが、中台に菊の模様が浮き彫りされた特別なもののようだ。縁先手水鉢を澄んだ水で満たせばこの庭の風景は格段に上がるだろう。１２月半ばの遅い紅葉が庭を彩っていた。

これまでに常陸宮家や秩父宮家、高松宮家もこの貴賓室「花王」に御宿泊された。

In 1926, Emperor Showa stayed at Tomoe Ryokan on his visit to Hagi. In 1968, at the Yamaguchi National Sports Festival, he stayed at Tomoe again. "Kao" is a room that was faithfully relocated and restored from the guest room where His Majesty the Emperor stayed. This room is located in the deepest part of the accommodation building, and only guests can go beyond the sliding door that serves as a gate. Other guest rooms also have private gardens, but Kao's private garden is special. A row of expensive natural stone stepping stones gently arcs down the middle of the garden, and another row of stepping stones crosses the garden, where they meet. A flat stone that has a strong presence in the center of the garden is the cornerstone of this garden. This stone should be considered as the standing stand of Emperor Showa. There is a dry waterfall stonework on the artificial hill behind the garden. The stone lantern standing on the right side has a special design with a chrysanthemum pattern engraved on the center stand. Filling the EnsakiChozubachi water basin with clear water would greatly improve the scenery of this garden. Late autumn leaves in mid-December colored the garden vividly.

The Hitachinomiya family, the Chichibunomiya family, and the Takamatsunomiya family have also stayed at this VIP room "Kao".
