2025年に創業100年を迎える老舗旅館。明治・大正時代にかけて萩には皇族などが宿泊できる宿がなかったため、第26代総理大臣・田中義一らの要請により実業家（後に衆議院議員）厚東 常吉（ことうつねきち、1884年- 1968年）が大正14年に萩市中心部に創業した。平成元年、東萩駅に近い現在地に移転。創業翌年の大正15年には皇太子時代の昭和天皇が宿泊されるなど、多くの皇族や名士たちを迎えた。

平成元年の移転に際し敷地は約2700坪となり建物は純和風の数寄屋建築をイメージして新築、創業当時の建物へのオマージュとしてレセプション棟の外壁を下見板張とし記憶を繋いでいる。それいがいの建物の外壁は白漆喰として格式を示し、内部の壁はややくだけた数寄屋的な黄色い聚楽壁としている。室内はどこか柳宗悦が主催した「民藝」運動的なテイストが漂っている。

敷地のうち1000坪が庭園となっており建物は庭の中にあると言っても過言ではない。特に印象的なのはレセプション棟から客室へとむかう回廊沿いで宿泊者を出迎えてくれる主庭だ。回廊には日本を代表するミッドセンチュリーのデザイナー柳宗理（柳宗悦の息子）のデザインを彷彿とさせる和風ウィンザーチェアが並べられ、朝昼夕夜と刻々と変化する庭をガラス越しに鑑賞することができる。椅子の他に行灯型の照明もパースペクティブに並べられドラマチックである。また夕刻ともなればほんのりとした優しい明かりが灯り良い雰囲気だ。この主庭は中央に大立石と松を置いている。主木として目出度い夫婦の松が植えることで宿泊者を祝福し、大立石は皆の繁栄を祈るように立派だ。旅館の庭であるので立石には須弥山のような宗教的な意味はないだろう。波のような砂紋の白砂を緑の苔が島のように縁取っている。背景の生け垣は二段に分かれて重奏的だ。昭和後期から平成前期に流行した大変洗練された京都風の座鑑式枯山水庭園である。この他にもレセプションの横のウェルカムドリンクが出されるテーブル席の窓の外に枯山水庭園があり、この庭は朝食室からも眺めることができる。ロビーの階段下には小さな箱庭に小ぶりの石灯籠が立つ枯山水もあり黄色い聚楽壁や黒く塗られた木材とよく似合っている。もちろん各客室から専用の庭園がのぞめ四季折々に美しい。ただし、庭が枯山水だけで池泉がまったくないせいで、生き生きした水のキラメキや水音はもちろん、ガラス越しの庭では風の流れ、緑の匂い、鳥のさえずりすら感じることはできず、まるで時が止まってしまったかのような冷たい寂しさが館内に漂っている、これはとても残念なことだ。せめてロビーに澄んだ水が流れる手水鉢の一つでもあれば印象は変わると思うのだが、はてどうだろう。あくまでも個人の意見である。

Tomoe is a long-established inn that will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2025. During the Meiji and Taisho eras, there were no formal lodgings in Hagi where members of the imperial family could stay. 1968) established Tomoe Ryokan in the center of Hagi City in 1924. In 1923, the year after its founding, Emperor Showa, who was the crown prince, stayed at Tomoe, and since then, he has welcomed many members of the imperial family and celebrities.

In 1989, Tomoe moved from the center of Hagi City to its current location near Higashihagi Station. Due to the relocation, the site expanded to about 8,925 square meters, and the building was newly built with a mixture of reinforced concrete and wooden construction in the image of a pure Japanese-style Sukiya architecture. The outer wall of the new reception building is in the same style as the original building of Tomoe Ryokan. Another feature of the building is that the inner walls are yellow Jyuraku walls, which are like Sukiya, and the wood is painted black to contrast with the yellow walls. The lobby and other interiors remind us of Yanagi Soetsu's Mingei movement. Many Windsor chairs resemble designs by Japanese mid-century furniture designer Yanagi Sori.

Approximately 3,305 square meters is a garden, and it is no exaggeration to say that the building is in the garden.

Especially impressive is the main garden along the corridor leading from the reception building to the guest room building. This garden welcomes all guests. Wooden chairs are lined up in the corridor, and you can appreciate the ever-changing garden through the glass. In addition to the chairs, Japanese traditional lantern-shaped lights are also arranged in perspective, creating a dramatic landscape. In the evening, the lights are gentle on the lanterns, creating a pleasant atmosphere. This main garden has a large stone in the center and pine trees on both sides. As the main tree, a couple of pine trees are planted to bless the guests, and the large standing stone is magnificent as if to pray for everyone's prosperity. Since it is a ryokan's garden, the tateishi probably does not have a religious significance like that of Mt. Sumeru.

White sand with ripples like waves and green moss like an island. The hedge in the background is divided into two stages to create a ensemble. It is a very sophisticated Kyoto-style dry landscape garden that was popular in the late Showa and early Heisei eras.

In addition, there is a dry landscape garden outside the window of the table seat where the welcome drink is served next to the reception. The garden can also be viewed from the breakfast room. Under the stairs in the lobby, there is a dry landscape garden with small stone lanterns in a small miniature garden, which harmonizes well with the yellow Juraku wall and black painted wood. Of course, each guest room has its own garden, which is beautiful in every season.
