願楽寺「紫白庭」島根県

「願楽寺・がんぎょうじ」は、、戦国時代・文明3年（1471年）の創建。江戸時代中期の1782年（天明2年）から1788年（天明8年）にかけての天明の大飢饉の時、願楽寺十代住職諦観（だいかん）が、もみ倉のもみを放出して飢えた村人たちを救った。感謝した人々は、寺の裏山を削り境内を拡張して庭園を作ったと言い伝えられている。庭園は「紫白庭・しはくてい」と名づけられ今日に至っている。庭園は現在の庫裏の真裏に位置し、様式は部屋から眺める座鑑式池泉庭園。庫裏に沿って掘られた細長い池を挟んで立ちはだかる見上げんばかりの急斜面をサツキを主とする角型の組み合わせで剪定された植込が覆い、左手の斜面に三段に分けられた滝石組から岩清水のように水が滴り落ち、水滴が波紋を描く心字池には鯉が静かに泳いでいる。苔も美しく保たれ、庭の隅々まで手入れが行き届きドラマチックでありながら清らかで静謐な空間となっている。庭の手入れは代々の住職により行われてきた。崖にも等しい急斜面に植えられた庭木の管理は危険な作業を伴うため、その御苦労は並大抵ではないようだ。この「紫白庭」は江戸後期の作庭と伝わるが、島根県には室町時代に雪舟が作庭した庭園が多く残され、それらの多くは山の傾斜地とお堂のあいだの狭小地に作られる座鑑式池泉庭園である。この願楽寺の庭園も江戸後期の作にも関わらず室町時代の雪舟庭園の影響を受けている。地元の農民たちによる作庭と伝承されるが、作庭にあたっては益田市の医光寺など他の複数の庭園に足を運んで勉強し参考にしたのではないだろうか。また、現在の本堂は文化10年（1813）に再建されたものだが浄土真宗ならではの黄金の欄間彫刻など華麗な建築装飾は一見の価値あり。寺は戦国時代の創建を彷彿とさせる山裾に築かれた石垣の上に建てられており、秋ともなれば城の櫓にも似た白漆喰のお堂の壁が燃え立つような紅葉を際立たせ美しい。

Gangyo-ji Temple "Shihaku tei Garden" Shimane Prefecture

"Gangyo-ji Temple" was founded in 1471. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1813. During the great Tenmei famine that occurred from 1782 to 1788 during the Edo period (1603 – 1868), Daikan, the 10th chief priest distributed rice to villagers. It is said that the grateful villagers carried out a large-scale civil engineering work to carve the mountain behind the temple, expand the precincts and create a garden. This garden was named "Shihaku tei garden".

The style of this garden is a zakanshiki chisen garden where you can sit in a room and look at it. There is a pond in the long, narrow strip of land between the temple building and the steep slope. The entire steep slope is covered with shrub azaleas pruned in a square composition. Water drips from the three-tiered stonework of the waterfall on the left side of the slope, and koi fish swim peacefully in the Shinjiike Pond. The moss is kept beautifully, and every corner of the garden is meticulously cared for, creating a dramatic yet serene and pure space.

Maintenance of the garden is the role of the chief priest for generations. Management of azaleas planted on a steep slope almost like a cliff is a dangerous and not an easy job.

In addition, the temple is built on top of a stone wall built at the foot of a mountain reminiscent of the Sengoku period, and in autumn the white plastered walls of the temple, which resembles a castle tower, accentuate the fiery autumn leaves.
