「阿蘇プラザホテル」熊本県阿蘇市

1965年創業のホテル。創業時からの日本庭園がホテルロビーに面している。しかし残念なことにこの庭は日本庭園としてはすでに終了している感がある。すぐ真横にプールが作られ、丸い球体の照明器具が各所に置かれ、立派な大立石にはイルミネーションが巻き付けられ夜間はクリスマスのように色とりどりに明滅している。良い点は芝生の手入れが行き届いていること。他にも露天風呂に面して庭があるが管理は良いとは言えない。

さて、一旦日本庭園から外の小道に出て、水路を超えて生け垣の向こうに進むと別区画の庭に至る。そこは「パワースポットでスプーン曲げをする観光用アトラクションの場所」として近年つくられた庭だ。しかしあなどることなかれ、２つの巨石と環状列石が、意外なことにも他に類を見ない大変ユニークな日本庭園として成立しており一見の価値がある。日本庭園の源流でもある上古の時代の環状列石などの立石群は日本各地（イギリスやフランスなどでも）で見られるが、あえてそれをそのまま庭として設えるという発想は珍しい試みと言える。環状列石が立ち並ぶ区画を縁取る木立のなかにも石が配され、その外側の田園と、そのむこうに見晴かす火山群「阿蘇五岳」の雄大な自然、それらすべてが一体となり太古の力がみなぎるような独特の景観を生み出している。私はこの庭が大変気に入りました。また、ホテル内には美術館さながらに様々なアート作品が展示され私達をもてなしてくれる。まさにバブルの遺産、アール・ヌーヴォーやイン級の陶磁器、東山魁夷、なんと村上隆まで、たいへん幅広いコレクションとなっており楽しい。

A hotel founded in 1965. The Japanese garden that has existed since the establishment of the hotel faces the hotel lobby, but it seems that the Japanese garden has ceased to exist. Round spherical lighting fixtures are placed and the large standing stone is wrapped in illuminations, creating a Christmas-like scene at night. The good thing is that the lawn is well maintained.

Once you emerge from the Japanese garden onto the path outside and proceed beyond the hedge, you will arrive at a separate section of the garden. The garden was created as a ``tourist attraction where you can bend spoons at a power spot.'' However, don't be fooled, the two megaliths and stone circles surprisingly form a very unique Japanese garden that is unlike any other, and is well worth a visit. Groups of standing stones, such as stone circles from primitive times, which are the origin of Japanese gardens, can be found all over Japan (even in England and France), but the idea of daring to set them up as a garden is an unusual. Stones are also placed within the grove of trees that border the block lined with stone circles, and the countryside outside and the nature of the five Aso mountains beyond, all come together to create a powerful and unique landscape. I really liked this garden. In addition, the hotel welcomes us with a variety of art works on display, much like a museum.
