“Minamikan -inn” Shimane Prefecture
Minamikan is a long-established inn that was founded in 1896. Countless celebrities, including members of the imperial family, have stayed there. “Minamikan'' is basically a luxury inn, but even if you don't stay there, you can see the garden by eating at “Teien Saryo Minami'', a kaiseki restaurant on the first floor. We recommend the “Taimeshi'' course for lunch. There's plenty of sashimi, conger eel tempura, beef, and more to satisfy everyone. While you're eating, you can admire the garden through the fully glass windows, and after your meal, you can actually go out and enjoy a walk in the garden. The hospitable staff will also take photos for you.
The garden is Karesansui Garden, with Lake Shinji as its backdrop. While the pine trees and stone lanterns from the time of the establishment have been carefully preserved, the garden's nobedan and paving stones have been arranged in a modern style.
The main trees in the garden are 13 Izumo black pines and two red pines. The oldest tree is 300 years old, but the tree remains small by pruning using the short-leaf method (bud-picking). The contrast between the green moss and the white sand with ripples underfoot is beautiful.
The small house in the garden is a copy of the sub-temple of Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto, "Koho-an'' and the tea room "Bosen'', and the three-part stair-like shrubbery that extends in a straight line is also in the style of Koho-an. It goes without saying that Kohoan was rebuilt by Fumai Matsudaira, the seventh lord of the Matsue domain.
The garden is modern and stylishly arranged. However, in the center of the front of the garden, the "alternating long and thin nobedan'', which is a characteristic of Izumo-style gardens, are placed, paying full respect to the traditional culture of the local Matsue area.
