"Former Lord of Usuki, Inaba Family Shimoyasiki" Usuki City, Oita Prefecture

During the Edo period, the Inaba family served as the lord of Usuki for about 270 years from 1600. When the era changed to the Meiji period, Inaba moved to Tokyo, and the Inaba family Shimoyasiki was built in 1902 as a residence for when he returned home. This residence is an early Meiji-era building that inherited the style of high-ranking samurai residences in Edo, and boasts a high level of prestige befitting a daimyo family, such as the Shikidai entrance and a large front shoin.

The garden was created later to match the residence, but it is planted with prestigious pines, cypresses, and plum trees befitting a samurai family, and has sharp standing stones and stones with holes, giving it a traditional feel reminiscent of Yin-Yang stones that represent the wish for the prosperity of descendants. However, it also has a bright grassy plaza, typical of Meiji-era gardens, and the garden site is approximately 43m east to west and 23 to 31m north to south, making it a stroll-style dry landscape garden without a pond.

You can also visit the adjacent Edo period samurai residence, the Former Hirai Family Residence.
