"Chofu Garden" Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture

The garden was developed on the former residence of Nishi Yukinaga, a senior retainer of the Chofu Mori clan during the Edo period, and a new teahouse was added, and is now open to the public by Shimonoseki City. The approximately 30,000 square meter site, backed by a small hill, is centered around a pond and features a lawn plaza, a study, two teahouses, a yarimizu waterfall, and an iris pond. The white walls of two old storehouses that remain from the time of the senior retainer's residence cast shadows over the pond and accentuate the garden. Various stone lanterns and stone towers of various sizes are placed throughout the garden. One stone lantern has an embossed chrysanthemum crest that tells of the connection between the Choshu clan and the imperial family from the end of the Edo period to the Meiji period. Various plants such as lotus, cherry blossoms, and maples have been planted so that they can be enjoyed in each of the four seasons.
