修善院は室町時代（1414）に創建された臨済宗佛通寺派の寺院。境内全体が庭として美しく設えられ清掃も行き届いている。なかでも本堂前の枯山水「随心庭（ずいしんてい）」は瀬戸内海を表現したもの。心静かに庭と向かい合えば、尾道の海のように小さな島々の間を元気に船が行き交う様子に活力を感じエネルギッシュになったり、まるく浮かぶ平らかで大きな苔島の優しさに包まれ平安に満たされたり、庭が肉体精神両面に働きかけて心身の調和を得ることができる。

実はこの修善院には足の速い神様「韋駄天」が祀られている。その御縁もあって、ご住職の神田敬州氏は駅伝の強豪校として有名な地元「世羅高校」の陸上部の部員たちに坐禅の指導などを通してメンター的存在として活躍されている。（実はご住職も世羅高OB）本堂内には高橋尚子や有森裕子など一流アスリートのランニングシューズが奉納されているので運が良ければ見学できるかも。

Shuzen-in Temple is a Rinzai sect temple founded in the Muromachi period (1414). The entire grounds are beautifully arranged as gardens and are well-maintained. In particular, the dry landscape garden "Zuishintei" in front of the main hall represents the Seto Inland Sea. If you face the garden calmly, you will be energized by the lively boats passing between the small islands like the sea of ​​Onomichi, or you will be enveloped in the generous kindness of the large floating moss island, and the garden will speak to your heart in various ways.

In fact, Shuzen-in Temple enshrines the god of speed, "Idaten." Due to this connection, the head priest, Keishu Kanda, is active as a mentor to the track and field team members of the local "Sera High School," which is famous for being a strong school for relay races, by teaching them zazen meditation. (Actually, the head priest is also a graduate of Sera High School.) In the main hall, there are running shoes of top athletes such as Takahashi Naoko and Arimori Yuko, so if you're lucky, you might be able to see them.
