「都城 島津邸・主庭」宮崎県都城市

昭和１０年の作庭。本邸の南に広がる主庭は、本邸を１段高い位置として庭全体が南へ行くに従って徐々に低くなっている。庭の東北には本邸と同じ高さで一族を祀る神社がある。庭園の東辺の縁の高さを本邸と同じまま維持してその先の南東にあるテニスコートへの通路とし、その高低差による斜面に築山的な景物を置くなど工夫が見られるが、中でも鹿児島市の仙巌園池泉庭の雪見灯籠とよく似た八角燈籠が置かれているのは薩摩島津氏との繋がりを強く感じさせる。このように庭園内に本格的な築山と呼べるものは見当たらず微妙な高低差で変化をもたらす設えとなっている、続く庭中心の東半分は芝生の広場で西洋的な景観、それに続く庭の中心西半分は梅や椿や玉ものに仕立てたサツキやヒノキ科などの植栽群に大きな石灯籠や磁器製の丸テーブルと腰掛けのセットなどが置かれる。さらに西に進むと植栽は高木中心となり木漏れ日が美しい森のような雰囲気が与えられている。また庭の一番西端にはプールがあり先述のテニスコート同様に島津家の人々の西洋的な暮らしが伺える。これら主庭の１段下のエリアには雑木林と広がり大きな池があるが、特に庭園として設えられている様子は見受けられない。池の水源は湧水とのことだが、島津邸敷地全体で池に一番近い庭園南東部が一番低くなっており、降雨による排水の一時的貯水を池が担っていたのではないかと思われる。また昭和２８年に昭和天皇がご宿泊された際には庭園の一部改造がなされ、現在見られる庭園を囲むように植えられた高木は、両陛下のお部屋が外部から見えないように、との配慮に基づくもの。また畳二畳はあるかと思えるほど大きな靴脱ぎ石もこの時に置かれたと思われる。この他に、邸内には昭和天皇がお使いになった風呂場に面して坪庭がある。また本邸北側には庭園とは異なる大きな広場があり武家屋敷に特有の教練場だったと思われ、剣道場なども残されている。

A garden made in 1935. Large main garden facing the south side of the house. The house is located one step higher than the garden, and the whole garden is getting lower gradually as you go south. The presence of a stone octagonal lantern similar to Yukimirantan in the pond of Senganen in Kagoshima City strongly feels the connection with Satsuma Shimadzu. The east half of the garden center is a lawn square, and the western half of the garden center is a set of planting groups such as plums, camellas, azaleas and cypresses, large stone lanterns and a set of porcelain round tables and stools, etc. . On the west side of the garden, trees are planted and the atmosphere is like a forest with beautiful sunbeams. There are a pool and a tennis court, and the western lifestyle of the people of the Shimadzu family can be enjoyed. Inside the house there is a small courtyard facing the guest bathroom. There was a large square on the north side of the house, and it was a training place for warriors who must be in the samurai residence. The building of Kendo ground is left facing the open space.
