現熊本県立図書館には１９７０年代まで細川藩主一門であった内膳家の邸宅と思われてきた屋敷があったが邸宅は取り壊されその敷地に熊本県立図書館が１９８５年に開館、庭だけが取り残されていた。しかしその後の研究で屋敷は1877年の西南戦争以前まで細川藩主の別邸の一つであったことが判明。幸い庭園の保存状態はよく復元が望まれている。庭園は主庭と内庭の２つが残されている。

Until the 1970s, the current Kumamoto Prefectural Library was home to a mansion that was thought to be the residence of the Uchizen family, who were vassals of the Hosokawa Domain. The mansion was demolished and the Kumamoto Prefectural Library opened on the site in 1985, leaving only the garden behind. However, subsequent research revealed that the mansion was one of the Hosokawa Domain's villas until before the Satsuma Rebellion in 1877. Fortunately, the garden is in good condition and is in need of restoration. Two gardens remain: the main garden and the inner garden.
