「康徳寺」広島県世羅郡世羅町

白鳳時代（672年～）に創建されたと伝えられる古刹。本堂のそばには、画聖雪舟築庭と伝えられる庭園があります。雪舟は修業時代の一時期、世羅の隣町の甲山町の円満寺に籍を置き、康徳寺と関係の深かった甲山町の萬年寺と親交を結んでいたことから、当時の3代住職仲和尚のもとに足を運んだという記録が残っているとか。もし庭が本当に雪舟の作品であったとしても修行時代であり明朝に遊学する以前のことであり庭園に雪舟の特徴はほぼ見られない。また後代の植栽が多すぎて石組みを隠してしまっているので全体がよくわからないのが残念。私見では護岸石組みの形や枯滝石組の形状角度などに雪舟の面影が宿っているようにも感じる。

康徳寺の境内は季節ごとに表情を変えるが、特に23代住職諦道和尚が1982年頃より植え育てたアジサイは現在4,000本を超え、6月中旬から7月中頃まで境内のアジサイの丘、墓地、池などを巡る散策道沿いで咲き誇り、一見の価値がある。

"Koutokuji Temple" Sera-cho, Sera-gun, Hiroshima Prefecture

An ancient temple said to have been founded in the Hakuho period (672-). Near the main hall is a garden said to have been built by the master painter Sesshu. During his training, Sesshu was registered at Enmanji Temple in Kabutoyama-cho, the neighboring town of Sera, and had a friendly relationship with Mannenji Temple in Kabutoyama-cho, which had a close relationship with Kotokuji Temple, so there is a record that he visited the third head priest at that time, Naka Osho. Even if the garden is really the work of Sesshu, it was during his training period, before he traveled to study in the Ming Dynasty, so there are almost no Sesshu characteristics in the garden. Also, there are so many later plantings that the stonework is hidden, so it is unfortunate that the whole picture is not clear.

The temple grounds change with the seasons, but the hydrangeas planted and cultivated by the 23rd head priest, Daido, since 1982 are now over 4,000, and are worth a visit from mid-June to mid-July, blooming along the walking trails around the temple grounds' hydrangea hills, cemeteries, and ponds.
