"Kikuya Family and Shoin Garden" Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture
The residence of the Kikuya family, wealthy merchants who served as purveyors to the Hagi domain. Built around 1600 in the early Edo period, it is a very old merchant building with a history of over 400 years. Five buildings on the estate have been designated as important cultural properties of Japan, and currently, about one-third of the grounds are open to the public.
Many valuable materials, such as art pieces such as paintings by Kano Motonobu, folk tools, and old books, are on display, mainly from the Edo period, and among them are works by Sesshu from the Muromachi period, which are open to the public depending on the season.
The Kikuya family garden is a dry landscape garden with a zakanshiki style that was created along with the Shoin building (reconstructed) where visitors were entertained, and was influenced by the Izumo-ryu garden of the neighboring Matsue domain. The Shoin was reconstructed recently, but the Shoin architecture of the Edo period was reproduced as much as possible based on the main house, creating a beautiful landscape that is integrated with the garden. Large blue pebbles are laid along the removable zelkova veranda, creating a beautiful contrast with the sand in the garden. A "basket stone" for placing the lord's basket when he entered the garden through the Onarimon Gate is placed in the center of the garden, making it the focal point of the garden, and round, square, and rectangular stepping stones are also important accents of the garden. In the rear of the garden, a shrine to the local god and stone towers are beautifully arranged, and behind that, the eastern storehouse stands tall as an extension of the mountain, with its white plaster walls as a backdrop that beautifully highlights the scenery on the mountain and the garden trees. In addition, there are magnificent veranda hand-watering basins near the Onarimon Gate on the veranda of the Shoin and behind the attached Shoin, which are like key points that hold down the edge of the veranda. A bamboo fence runs across the south of the garden, and beyond that, a teahouse and a garden give the garden a tasteful depth. ◼︎Name: "Kikuya Family Shoin Garden"
