「菊屋家住宅・南庭」山口県萩市

南庭は、菊屋家住宅の南側の1,530㎡の広大な敷地に広がる近代和風庭園です。明治32年に総理大臣・伊藤博文が宿泊した「御部屋」棟、昭和10年に皇族をもてなした「新座敷」棟、が順次増築される度に庭園も大規模に改修され現在の景観となりました。まず「御部屋」の東側に面して小さな築山があります。この上には庭石の他に祠が置かれ鳥居もあります。松の大木が茂り薄暗く神秘的的な雰囲気となっています。鳥居には文化八年と彫られ、ここが江戸時代からあった古い庭であることを伝えています。その意味ではこの部分は新庭ではありません。このエリアをすぎると視界は明るく開け近代和風庭園のエリアとなり、その大部分は築山式枯山水庭園として地割りされ、近代和風庭園の特徴である大きな芝生の広場の縁を、枯流が弧を描きながら進み、庭園背後の三尊石がある築山の前に架かる石の太鼓橋の下をすぎると、やがて庭園中央で枯池となり、島も作られています。また、庭の中心に植えられている低木の紅葉は、ひとつの台木に異なる３種類の接木がなされた珍しいもので、秋には一本の木で三種の紅葉が楽しめます。

The Southern Garden of Kikuya family house is “築山式枯山水庭園 / Tsukiyama-style Karesansui Garden”, covering 1,530 m2, which was maintained over the three periods of the Meiji, Taisho and Showa eras. In 1873, the “御部屋 / Oheya" building where Prime Minister Hirofumi Ito stayed, and the “新座敷 / Shin-Zashiki" building in 1935 to entertain the royal family, the garden was renovated to a large scale and became the current landscape. The feature is that there is always a lawn open space in the modern Japanese garden. A dry stream is flowing around the garden in a large arc. There are many pine trees. The main element is a stone arch bridge. As an unusual element, Japanese maple in the center of the garden has three types of grafts on one tree, so you can enjoy the autumn leaves of different colors.
