小野屋がある原鶴温泉は福岡県南部の古い温泉地。ホテルや旅館が筑後川沿いに立ち並び、大分県日田温泉の西に位置する。古くから温泉地として栄え鵜飼ショーなども観光名物。小野屋は１３０年以上前に創業した老舗。小野屋は時代とともに改装を繰り返したため、このホテルの日本庭園がいつ頃作られたか定かではなくなっている。１３０年前の創業時からこのホテルに日本庭園があったことは間違いないが、現在残されている庭はそれほど古くはないように思える。現在小野屋には二つの枯山水が残されている。一つは本館ロビーのガラス窓に面した大きな枯滝石組を持つダイナミックな庭で石垣を庭園要素として組み入れていることも大きな特徴の一つ、もう一つはホテル敷地中央のなだらかな起伏を持ちながらも平かな印象の広大な緑の芝生に控えめに尖らない石と石橋を配した庭。また小野屋にはプライベートな日本庭園に面した築60年の茅葺き数寄屋建築「待月庵」、芝生の日本庭園に面した離れ棟の食事処「寿泉」がある。また大きな石組と蓑垣を組み合わせた露天風呂は滝から流れ落ちた温泉が小川となって横切り石橋の下を流れ下る。まさに日本庭園的な景観を創出しており見事。

"Hotel Parens Onoya" Asakura City, Fukuoka Prefecture

Haratsuru Onsen, where Onoya is located, is an old hot spring resort in southern Fukuoka Prefecture. Hotels and inns line the Chikugo River, and it is located west of Hita Onsen in Oita Prefecture. It has flourished as a hot spring resort since ancient times, and cormorant fishing shows are also tourist attractions. Onoya is a long-established hotel that was founded over 130 years ago. Onoya has been renovated many times over the years, so it is unclear when the hotel's Japanese garden was created. There is no doubt that the hotel had a Japanese garden from the time of its founding 130 years ago, but the garden that remains today does not seem to be that old. There are currently two dry landscape gardens remaining at Onoya. One is a dynamic garden with a large dry waterfall stone arrangement facing the glass windows of the main lobby, and one of its major features is the incorporation of stone walls as a garden element. The other is a garden in the center of the hotel grounds, with blunt stones and a stone bridge modestly arranged on a vast green lawn that has a gently undulating yet flat impression. Onoya also has a 60-year-old thatched sukiya-style building called "Matsugetsuan" facing a private Japanese garden, and a restaurant called "Juisen" in a separate building facing the Japanese lawn garden. The open-air bath, which combines large stonework and a straw fence, has hot spring water flowing down from a waterfall as a stream that crosses and flows down under a stone bridge. It creates a truly Japanese garden-like landscape and is magnificent.
