ちょっと意外な場所「競馬場」にある日本庭園。

日本で馬券を販売する西洋式の競馬が始まったのは江戸時代すなわち幕末、横浜の外国人居留地でのことです。次の明治時代になると芝生のコースや観客のスタンドや馬券売り場をそなえた本格的な競馬場が登場しました。このように西洋スタイルの施設として出発した日本の競馬場は周囲を西洋式公園として整えることが通常です。現在日本各地に国の特殊法人JRA日本中央競馬会が運営する１０の競馬場がありますが、そのなかに例外としてひとつだけ日本庭園を持つ競馬場、それが「小倉競馬場」です。

小倉競馬場の歴史は115年前に遡りますが移転を経て1931年現在地に基本施設が完成しました。日本庭園はそのとき作られたものです。北九州市は１８世紀の後半から始まった日本の産業革命の象徴・八幡製鉄所を中心に栄えた一大工業都市でした。煙突が立ち並び煤が降り注ぐ工業都市であったからこそ人々は伝統的な日本庭園に癒やしを求めたのかもしれません。この庭に植えられている黒松は現在樹齢１００歳を超え私達にこの都市ならではの物語を伝えています。

この庭の池は決して大きくありませんが２つの島があり本格的で格式高い様式に分類されます。池の大小２つの島の間をつなぎ沢飛び石が置かれています。

大きな島には景石が美しく配され古風な雪見灯籠が置かれています。小さな島に景石はありませんが珍しい雪見石灯籠が置かれています。「奥の院」は数ある石灯籠の中で最も装飾的なものとして知られていますが、その奥の院の装飾的な彫刻を施した雪見灯籠ががこの島にあります。

1999年、小倉競馬場では全面リニューアル工事がおこなわれ２０世紀末ならではのポストモダニズム様式による未来的な外観の巨大なガラス張りのホールが建てられました。幸い1931年に作られた日本庭園はそのまま残されました。現在、庭は新築された巨大なホールを借景にしています。池の縁には近未来的な建物の屋根を模したトピアリーが設えられています。庭師のこの粋な仕事は新しい建物と昔からの庭に絆をもたらすものです。

小倉競馬場はガラス張りの巨大な客席やレストランやフードコートもあり隅々まで清掃が行き届き清潔。一日中快適にすごすことができます。ホールに飾られている1９９９と書かれた巨大なイラストは北九州市生まれの松本零士の作品。ホールが完成した1999年と銀河鉄道９９９にちなんでいます。

“Kokura Racecourse” Kitakyushu city, Fukuoka Prefecture

A Japanese garden at a slightly unexpected place: a racecourse.

Western-style horse racing, where betting tickets are sold, began in Japan during the Edo period, i.e., at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate, in the foreign settlement in Yokohama. In the following Meiji period, full-scale racecourses with grass courses, stands for spectators, and betting booths appeared. In this way, Japanese racecourses that started out as Western-style facilities are usually surrounded by Western-style parks. Currently, there are 10 racecourses operated by the Japan Racing Association, a national special corporation, across Japan, and the only one that has a Japanese garden is Kokura Racecourse.

The history of Kokura Racecourse dates back 115 years, but after relocation, the basic facilities were completed at the current location in 1931. The Japanese garden was created at that time. Kitakyushu City was a major industrial city that flourished around the Yawata Steel Works, a symbol of Japan's industrial revolution that began in the latter half of the 18th century. Perhaps it was precisely because Kokura was an industrial city with rows of chimneys and soot that people sought healing in traditional Japanese gardens. The black pine trees planted in this garden are now over 100 years old and tell us a story unique to this city.

The pond in this garden is not large, but it has two islands and is classified as a formal and prestigious style. A stepping stone is placed between the two islands of the pond.

The large island is beautifully decorated with scenic stones and has an old-fashioned snow-viewing lantern. The small island has no scenic stones, but has a rare snow-viewing stone lantern. The "inner sanctuary" is known as the most decorative of the many stone lanterns, and the snow-viewing lantern with decorative carvings from the inner sanctuary is located on this island.

In 1999, Kokura Racecourse underwent a complete renovation, and a huge glass-walled hall with a futuristic appearance in the postmodernist style unique to the late 20th century was built. Fortunately, the Japanese garden created in 1931 was left as it was. Currently, the garden makes use of the newly constructed huge hall as a backdrop. A topiary modeled after the roof of a futuristic building has been placed around the edge of the pond. This elegant work by the gardener creates a bond between the new building and the old garden.

Kokura Racecourse has huge glass-enclosed seating, a restaurant and a food court, and is thoroughly cleaned throughout. You can spend the whole day here in comfort. The huge illustration with the number 1999 that is displayed in the hall was created by Kitakyushu-born Matsumoto Leiji. It is a reference to the year 1999, when the hall was completed, and to Galaxy Express 999.
