「知覧武家屋敷庭園 7. 森重堅氏庭園」鹿児島県南九州市

知覧武家屋敷にはそれぞれ日本庭園があり、全７庭がまとめて有料で公開されています。今回はその最後、7番目「森重堅氏庭園」です。この庭園は知覧七庭で唯一の池泉庭です。水源はすぐ裏山にあり築庭以来一度も枯れたことがないそうです。池には主石として立派なアーチ状の洞窟石組みがあり、その背後の大立石や石塔がある石組みは須弥山や蓬莱島のようです。池の背後に隣接してナマコのようにべったりとした大刈込みは皐月。その後ろの面取りされた角のある波型の大刈込みは素晴らしい躍動感がありこの庭に独自の芸術性をもたらしています。池の背景の築山に園路があり小さいながらも回遊式となっています。裏山にそびえる杉木立は庭と連携し庭を実際より大きく雄大に見せています。刈込みや庭木などがすっきりしており奇岩群との対照的な組み合わせが大変美しい庭です。

"Chiran Samurai Residence Gardens 7. Mori Shigekata Garden" Minamikyushu City, Kagoshima Prefecture

Each of the Chiran Samurai Residences has a Japanese garden, and all seven gardens are open to the public for a fee. This time, we will visit the last of them, the seventh garden, "Mori Shigekata Garden". This garden is the only one of the Seven Gardens of Chiran that has a pond. The water source is right on the mountain behind the garden, and it has never dried up since it was built. The pond has a magnificent arch-shaped cave stonework as the main stone, and the stonework behind it, with a large standing stone and stone tower, represents Mount Sumeru and Horai Island. The sea cucumber-like topiary adjacent to the back of the pond is a satsuki. The wavy topiary behind it has a wonderful sense of dynamism and brings a unique artistic quality to this garden. There is a garden path on the artificial hill behind the pond, and although it is small, it is a circular path. The cedar grove towering on the mountain behind the garden works together with the garden, making it look larger and more majestic than it actually is. The topiary is neat, and the contrast with the strange rock formations makes this a very beautiful garden.
