"Japanese Garden Landscape of Obi" Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture
Obi is a small town in the central part of Nichinan City, in the southern part of Miyazaki Prefecture. For 280 years from 1588 to the early Meiji period, it prospered as a castle town of the Obi Domain and the Ito clan, with a stipend of 51,000 koku, and also prospered through the production of Obi cedar. The townscape, with its gates symbolizing samurai residences and tasteful stone walls, was designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 1977.
Starting from the Otemon Gate, which was restored in 1978, you can walk through the town and see merchants' houses with barrels in front of their stores, latticed wall lanterns and umbrellas on their eaves along Shoninmachi Street, and the clear streams of the moats that run through the town, all of which are reminiscent of the Edo period. Japanese gardens and Japanese garden-like landscapes remain in various places in the town, making them highly recommended.
