"Yomei-ji Temple" Tsuwano Town, Kashima District, Shimane Prefecture
Yomei-ji Temple was founded in 1420 by the fifth generation of the Yoshimi clan, the lord of Tsuwano Castle, Yorihiro, and was founded by the priest Getsuin, the grandson of Dogen. It flourished as the family temple of successive castle lords, and was extremely prosperous with 70 branch temples during the Edo period. It also served as a training center for Zen, where many unsui (monks) practiced their asceticism. Climbing the approach to the temple, you will come across the magnificent mountain gate. It is said to have been moved from the main gate of Tsuwano Castle. The thatched-roof main hall was built in 1779 and houses the kuri (kitchen quarters). The bell tower was rebuilt in 1859. The main hall and the shoin garden were created during the Meiji period, and are full-scale pond viewing ceremonies. The garden is one of the most famous in the Iwami region, offering seasonal scenery such as fresh greenery in spring, water lilies in summer, and autumn leaves.
