「旧大島邸」佐賀県唐津市

唐津の近代化に貢献した大島小太郎の旧宅。

大島小太郎は唐津藩の英語学校で、東京駅を設計した辰野金吾らとともに、のちの蔵相、首相を務めた高橋是清の薫陶を受け、1885（明治18）年には佐賀銀行の前身となる唐津銀行を創立。その後も鉄道や道路の敷設、唐津港の整備など唐津の近代化に貢献した。

旧大島邸は主屋の完成は、1893（明治26）年、明治時代中期の大規模かつ極めて上質な住宅で、当時の和風住宅の庭（往時の築山や踏み石などの配置も再現されている。）を伴う建物構成や意匠の優秀さなどの特徴をよく示した建物となっている。本邸はもともと現在の敷地から300mほど西側に建っていたが、小学校校舎の増改築に伴い解体され、現在地に復元された。旧大島家の茶道は「宗徧流」、たいへん凝った茶室の設えも見どころの一つ。また客間の床柱はヤシ科の常緑樹「檳榔樹」滅多に見られない銘木。

"Former Oshima Residence" Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture

The former home of Oshima Kotaro, who contributed to the modernization of Karatsu.

Oshima Kotaro studied under Takahashi Korekiyo, who later served as Minister of Finance and Prime Minister, at the Karatsu Domain's English School, and in 1885 (Meiji 18) founded the Karatsu Bank, the predecessor to the Bank of Saga. He continued to contribute to the modernization of Karatsu through the construction of railways and roads, and the development of Karatsu Port.

The main building of the former Oshima Residence was completed in 1893 (Meiji 26), and is a large-scale, extremely high-quality residence from the mid-Meiji period, which well displays the characteristics of the building structure and excellent design, along with the Japanese-style garden of the time (the layout of the hill and stepping stones from the past has also been reproduced).

The main residence was originally built about 300m west of the current site, but was demolished due to the expansion and renovation of the elementary school building, and was restored to its current location. The tea ceremony of the former Oshima family was "Sohen-ryu", and the very elaborate tea room is one of the highlights. The alcove pillars in the guest room are made of the rare and precious wood of the evergreen palm family, the areca palm.
