「井口八幡神社」 熊本県人吉市

井口八幡神社は鎌倉時代の法治年間（1247~49)に人吉領主・相良頼親が鎌倉の鶴岡八幡宮を勧請したと伝えられ、領主相良氏の「戦の神」として代々保護を受けてきた。その庭園は清水を取り入れた池泉庭園で緩やかな起伏の築山の中央に枯滝を組み、中島と重ねて奥行きと拡がりのある景色を創出している。現在では背後に建物が立ち景色を遮っているが、作庭当初は背後の山並みを借景していたと考えられる。この庭園の作庭時期は不明だが中島にかかる合掌式の石橋や中島の背後に枯滝石組を重ねる構成は、同じ相良氏の御館跡庭園と大変よく似ており同人物の指導による作庭と考えられる。

"Inokuchi Hachiman Shrine" Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture

It is said that Inokuchi Hachiman Shrine was enshrined by Hitoyoshi feudal lord Sagara Yorichika from Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura during the Houji era (1247-49) of the Kamakura period, and has been protected for generations as the "god of war" of the feudal lord Sagara clan. The garden is a pond garden that incorporates pure water, with a dry waterfall in the center of a gently undulating artificial hill, and overlapping it with an island in the middle, creating a view with depth and breadth. Currently, a building stands behind it, blocking the view, but it is thought that when the garden was first created, the mountain range behind it was used as a backdrop. The date of the garden's creation is unknown, but the composition of the gassho-style stone bridge over the island and the dry waterfall stonework behind the island is very similar to the garden of the ruins of the Sagara clan's palace, and it is thought to have been created under the guidance of the same person.
