"Hiyako Kaimagari Koryukan" Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture

Hiyako in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, is designated as an important national preservation district for groups of traditional buildings, and retains the appearance of samurai residences from the Edo period. The name of the facility "Hiyako Kaimagari Koryukan" there, "Kaimagari", refers to a road that bent at a right angle, named after the shape of a key in the Edo period, to confuse enemy invasions, and is a tourist attraction that remains in many places in the samurai residence district of Hagi. And this "Hiyako Kaimagari Koryukan" is the vast former residence of the samurai "Kodama family" who served the Hagi domain, and a garden remains. The garden is located at the back of the residence, and the waterway that draws water from the Hashimoto River, the dynamic bank made of volcanic stones from Hagi's only volcano "Kasayama", the pond with a boat dock, the stone bridge over the pond, and other things are well preserved along with the surrounding trees. This type of garden is called a Funairishikichisenteien (boat-entering pond garden), and is a valuable relic that well preserves the style of the gardens of samurai residences that were once built along rivers.
