"Manpukuji Rakusan-en" Miyazaki Prefecture

Manpukuji is a famous Tendai temple. It is a temple in Inukuma (Honjo) that originates from the story of Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto. It is said that this is the place where Hikohohodemi-no-Mikoto mourned the dog and the bear after killing the dog in anger when it barked to warn of an attack by a bear. In 803, on his way to China, Saicho-hoshi stayed overnight at Kunitomi-sho (now Kunitomi-cho), where he was deeply moved by this story and made a wish to have a Buddha statue enshrined there. Manpukuji Temple was founded with the three Buddha statues carved at that time.

One of the highlights is the splendid dry landscape garden (Rakusan-en). It is a Momoyama-style garden with a famous red plum tree that has lived for several hundred years in the center, and was created using stones from Yoshino, Shirakawa sand from Kyoto, Kitayama cedar, and other materials. It is a small, tranquil garden with the hazy Mt. Wanitsuka in the distance.

The temple is especially crowded with visitors in mid-February when the red plum blossoms bloom.
