"Former Zasuin Gohonbo Garden" Tagawa District, Fukuoka Prefecture

The "Former Zasuin Gohonbo Garden" on Mt. Hiko is a garden that remains on the site of the residence of the "Zasu", the highest rank of Mt. Hiko, a land of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism that has flourished since the Heian period. The Takachiho family, the abbot of Mt. Hiko, was married to the eighth prince of Emperor Go-Fushimi in 1333, and their descendants still serve as the chief priests of Hiko-san Shrine.

The entire Zasuin is a terraced land built with stone walls on the slope of the mountain, and the abbot's residence was located at the top of it. In the past, access to it was restricted by a huge four-legged gate. The entire Zasuin site was transferred free of charge by the Takachiho family to Kyushu University on the condition that it be maintained as it is, and is now the "Mt. Hiko Biological Experimental Facility" attached to the Kyushu University Faculty of Agriculture, so you must contact Kyushu University and obtain prior permission to visit the "Former Zasuin Gohonbo Garden". However, as it is located deep in the mountains at an altitude of about 670m, there are many vipers in the garden, so please be careful about your shoes and clothing as you visit at your own risk.

The garden is thought to have been created in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, and the reason for this is the standing stone made of a huge stone placed in the center of the garden. The garden as a whole and in the details have been modified in later years, such as the bank and stone bridge, and has changed significantly from the original appearance. In addition to the garden, the tiered stone walls of the entire Zasuin temple, the moss-covered stone steps that continue in succession, and the retro architecture of the Kyushu University Hiko-san Biological Experimental Facility opened in 1936 are also worth visiting, so don't miss them.
